„Designing and Researching“
Neljapäev, 16. veebruar kell 17:00 / Thursday, February 16. at 17:00
In this lecture I shall raise questions concerning the relationship between researching and designing. I shall question why so much design research seems to have little interest in designing (preferring, instead, to assess outcomes), and so often produces results that are of little help to designers. I shall distinguish different approaches to designing, and consider ways of modelling and knowing in order to ask if we are creating appropriate forms of knowledge to help designers. This lecture is intended to raise questions. Although I shall give some answers, there is nothing sacrosanct about them. My wish is to help open a discussion, not to force my opinions.

Loeng on eelkõige mõeldud arhitektuuri eriala üliõpilastele ja arhitektidele, kuid avatud kõigile huvilistele. / The lecture is addressed to architecture students and practicing architects, but open to all interested parties.

„Freedom and the Machine“
Esmaspäev, 20. veebruar kell 17:00 / Monday, February 20. at 17:00
Are machines and mechanisms constraining tyrants, or do they provide structure and support for freedom? Cybernetics has been defined, by Ross Ashby, as “the study of all possible abstract machines”. In this lecture, I will explore cybernetic understandings of machines and mechanisms. I will introduce second order cybernetic understandings, through what I believe is the primary activity of humanity—making patterns. I will argue that this understanding brings us freedom of action, rather than imprisonment, and that second order cybernetic activity is very similar to design.

Loeng on eelkõige mõeldud loomeerialade magistri- ja doktoritaseme tudengitele, kuid avatud kõigile huvilistele. / The lecture is addressed to master and doctorate level students of creative fields, but open to all interested parties.

Ranulph Glanville is Professor Emeritus of Architecture and Cybernetics at UCL, London; Visiting Professor of Research, Innovation Design Engineering, RCA, London; Professor of Architecture, University of Newcastle, Australia; Senior Professor of Research Design, Sint Lucas Architecture, Brussels and Gent; Course Designer for Research, Hong Kong Design Institute; and Principal of CybernEthics Research. He is president of the American Society for Cybernetics and has published in excess of 350 academic publications. He has a diploma in architecture from the Architectural Association, London; a PhD in Cybernetics and a second PhD in Human Learning from Brunel University, which also awarded him a DSc in Cybernetics and Design in recognition of his work. He is an architect, composer and artist as well as a cybernetician.
